1 Corinthians 4:8-21
ARRIVING
AT OUR FIRST LOVE
LLEGANDO
A NUESTRO PRIMER AMOR
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have
become rich! You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you
really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you!
The
Corinthians thought they were already ruling, spiritually, with Christ prior to
His return. THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY HAD ARRIVED!
Paul uses sarcasm to point out their prideful
attitude.
Pablo utiliza sarcasmo para señalar su actitud
orgullosa.
These are a series of
sarcastic statements or questions that reveal the pride of the Corinthian
factious leaders. They thought they had arrived. Paul wished they had,
but it was not true; their actions revealed their maturity level (i.e.
babies in Christ).(Bob Utely)
Do we think we have arrived spiritually? - ¿Pensamos
nosotros que ya hemos llegado espiritualmente?
9 For it seems
to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession,
like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the
whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are
fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are
strong! You are honored, we are dishonored!
Once again
Paul points out the foolishness of God versus the wisdom of men. The
Corinthians looked at Paul as inferior to their new teachers and because of
their so-called spiritual maturity. Although Paul is degraded as a fool and
inferior; who are the real fools?
verdaderos necios¡?
In allusion is made to some of the bloody
spectacles in the Roman amphitheatres, where men were exposed to fight with
wild beasts, or to cut one another to pieces, to make diversion for the
populace, where the victor did not escape with his life, though he should
destroy his adversary, but was only reserved for another combat, and must be
devoured or cut in pieces at last; so that such wretched criminals (for they
were ordinarily condemned persons that were thus exposed) might very properly
be called—persons devoted or appointed to death. They are said to
be set forth last, because the meridian gladiators, those who combated one
another in the after-part of the day, were most exposed, being obliged to fight
naked; so that this was perfect butchery, and those exposed to beasts in the
morning were treated mercifully in comparison with these. The general meaning is that the apostles were exposed to
continual danger of death, and that of the worst kinds, in the faithful
discharge of their office. God had set them forth, brought them into view, as the Roman emperors brought their combatants into the
arena, the place of show, though not for the same purposes. They did it to
please the populace, and humor their own vanity, and sometimes a much worse
principle. The apostles were shown to
manifest the power of divine grace, to confirm the truth of their mission and
doctrine, and to propagate religion in the world. (Matthew Henry)
únicamente para otro combate, y deber ser devorado o despedazado por último;
(Matthew Henry)
Paul is being condemned for his faithfulness to
Christ and his mission. Does this happen today? How?
Pablo
11 To this very
hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are
homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are
cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when
we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the
garbage of the world—right up to this moment.
con nuestras propias manos. A las maldiciones respondemos con bendiciones;
Was
the life of an apostle easy?
¿Fue
la vida de un apóstol fácil?
Paul and his fellow-apostles were exposed to great
hardships. Never were any men in this world so hunted and worried. They carried
their lives in their hands... The faithful ministers and disciples of Christ
should contentedly undergo anything for his sake and honor. (Matthew Henry)
Pablo
(Matthew Henry)
Should we expect an easy path when we Jesus? Do we
ever get abused because of Jesus? Why? WHY NOT?
WE ARE CALLED TO REPRESENT!
SOMOS LLAMADOS A REPRESENTAR!
It is reasonably thought by the critics that an
allusion is here made to a common custom of many heathen nations, to offer
men in sacrifice in a time of pestilence, or other like grievous calamity.
These were ordinarily the vilest of men, persons of the lowest rank and worst
character. Thus, in the first ages, Christians were counted the source of
all public calamities, and were sacrificed to the people's rage, if not to
appease their angry deities. And apostles could not meet with better usage.
They suffered in their persons and characters as the very worst and vilest men,
as the most proper to make such a sacrifice: or else as the very dirt of the
world, that was to be swept away: nay, as the off-scouring of all things,
the dross, the filings of all things. They were the common-sewer into which all
the reproaches of the world were to be poured. (Matthew Henry)
(Matthew Henry)
Does
this happen today? - ¿Pasa esto hoy en día?
14 I am writing
this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. 15 Even
if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for
in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.
cristianos, tengan diez mil instructores, padres no tienen muchos.
a Cristo Jesús.
How was Paul
the Corinthians' father?
Are
ministers the only people who make disciples? Is it easy and always rewarding?
Paul is
reflecting the teachings of Jesus... Paul experienced verbal abuse from many
false teachers, but it was the church at Corinth that must have wounded him
the most. A group of people whom he personally led to Christ became his most
vocal slanderers... This paragraph shows
Paul’s personal pain involved in preaching the gospel. He felt humiliated and
rejected not only by the unbelieving, but by these arrogant Corinthian leaders.
(Bob Utely)
(Bob Utely)
Betrayal hurts! Some of my
greatest betrayals have happened in the church.
16 Therefore I
urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you
Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord.
Who is
Timothy?
¿Quién es
Timoteo?
Timothy was
converted on Paul’s first missionary journey and recruited as a helper on the
second. He became Paul’s trusted friend, companion, co-worker, and apostolic
representative. Sending Timothy showed Paul’s love and concern for this church.
But Paul worries about how some in the church would treat his young friend and
personal representative, Timothy. (Bob Utely)
personal, Timoteo. (Bob Utely)
He will remind you of my way of life in Christ
Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
Paul is stating that he taught the same message in all
the churches. The Corinthians did not receive a separate and different Gospel.
separado y diferente.
He therefore taught the same things in every
church, and lived after the same manner in all times and places. Note, The truth of Christ is one and invariable. What one
apostle taught every one taught. What one apostle taught at one time and in one
place, he taught at all times and in all places. Christians may mistake and
differ in their apprehensions, but Christ and Christian truth are the same
yesterday, today, and forever. (Matthew Henry)
mismo ayer, hoy y siempre. (Matthew Henry)
Do all churches today preach the same Gospel?
¿Predican
las iglesias el mismo Evangelio hoy?
Paul also lived out Christ teachings. Do we live
out Christ teachings?
Pablo
también vivió las enseñanzas de Cristo. ¿Vivimos nosotros las enseñanzas de Cristo?
Nothing which Jesus bids us do should be too hard for us
and nothing that He has bid should be forgotten. When we were in bondage under
sin we thought if the Lord did but forgive us we should become the most warmhearted
and loving servants in His employ. When I had the irons on my wrists and when I
sat in sackcloth and ashes in the thick darkness of despair, if anyone had said
to me, “The Lord will have mercy upon you and make a minister of you,” I would
have replied, “Then I will preach with all my heart and soul.” I should have
hoped to preach a hundred times better than I have ever done! If it had been
put to any one of you, do you not think you would have said, “I will serve Him
with my whole being. Redeemed by His blood, pressed to His bosom as a dear,
returning child—clothed in the best robe, with a ring on my finger and shoes on
my feet—I will live to my Father’s praise, yes, live with such intensity that
even Apostles and martyrs shall not excel me.” You have not done so, my Friend,
but the text calls you and me to do it and suggests to us a gratitude which
shall manifest itself in effort and glow in every action of our daily
life.(Charles Spurgeon)
(Charles
Spurgeon)
18 Some of you
have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19 But I
will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out
not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For
the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.
The false
teachers were eloquent in their speech but powerless in the results (cf. Matt.
7)...To put this truth in an American proverb, “actions speak louder than
words” or “the proof is in the pudding.” (Bob Utely)
Lives were not being changed under the teaching of
the false teachers. god's power is demonstrated in changed
lives...transformation! Are our lives being changed?
nuestras vidas cambiadas?
21 What do you
prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love
and with a gentle spirit?
Does Paul want to put the

¿Quiere
Pablo martillar sobre los corintios?
He wants
them to repent.
El quiere que ellos se arrepientan.
