1 Corinthians 5:1-6
SALVATION FROM SIN
LA SALVACIÓN
DEL PECADO
5 It
is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind
that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And
you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of
your fellowship the man who has been doing this?
orgullo! ¡Deberían llenarse de tristeza! El hombre que vive en semejante
situación debe ser expulsado de entre ustedes.
What is
immorality in Paul's view?
This is the
Greek term “pornia” which was the general term for sexual looseness. We
get the English word, pornography, from this Greek word. Greek Corinth was
known for its sexual promiscuity. Even other pagans were shocked by Corinth’s
immoral social license... This term refers to any sexual impropriety (i.e.
adultery, fornication, homosexuality, even bestiality). (Bob Utely)
impropiedad sexual. (ejemplo: adulterio, fornicación, homosexualidad,
incluso bestialidad). (Bob Utely)
Specifically,
Paul is addressing a situation where a man, perhaps a leader in the church, is
living with his step mother, his father's wife. Whether the man seduced his
step-mother away from his father or was living with his divorced or widowed
step-mother is uncertain.
This is only
the first part of the problem...the second part of the problem is the church is
proud of this immorality.
inmoralidad.
The
Corinthians believed they were saved by Grace and now they had freedom to live
the way they wanted. Everything was permissible.
Does this exist in the church today? - ¿Existe esto
hoy en día en la iglesia?
...there have
been others... who have dared to say that because they are saved, and Christ
has
finished His
work for them so that nothing is left undone by way of merit, therefore,
from now on they may act as they please, seeing that they are not under Law,
but under Grace. Our reply is that the Faith which saves is not an
unproductive Faith, but is always a Faith which produces good works, and
abounds in Holiness. Salvation in sin is not possible, it always must be
Salvation from sin...(Charles Spurgeon)
(Charles Spurgeon)
3 For my part, even though I
am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with
you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus
on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled
and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,
Paul asserts that as part
of the body of Christ, the communion of saints; he is still in relationship
with the church in Corinth. And he is still their pastor.
Pablo
Notice the
decision is made in the presence and Name of Christ.
The purpose
of church discipline is three-fold: (1) cleansing of the local church (i.e.
both from sin and the restoration of its image in the local community); (2) the
reformation and redemption of erring believers. It is just possible because of
v. 5 (also the same terms are used in Luke 23:18) that this refers to the death
of the erring believer(s); and (3) other believers seeing God’s discipline are
encouraged not to sin. (Bob Utely)
(Bob Utely)
5 hand this man over to Satan
for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of
the Lord.
Does Paul
want this man to be sent to hell?
Church
discipline must always be redemptive and restorative, not vindictive. This is the OT connotation of the word “saved,” which means
physical deliverance. This person, though acting immorally, is a member of
the church. He needs spiritual deliverance, not salvation... Satan becomes
an enemy of God, but he still is an unwilling servant. Satan’s function in
v. 5 is to bring ultimate salvation to an erring church member . (Bob
Utely)
y retroactiva, no vengativa.
iglesia. (Bob Utely)
God uses Satan, the destroyer of souls, to save souls.
Our God is ALL powerful!
salvar almas. Nuestro Dios es TODO
poderoso!!
6 Your boasting is not good.
Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?
Leaven is generally a
symbol of sin. What does leaven do to dough? What does sin do to the church?
La
levadura es generalmente un símbolo de pecado.
¿Qué hace la levadura en la masa?
¿Qué hace el pecado en la iglesia?
The leaven
of evil living, too, is equally obnoxious in the church. Tolerated in one, it will soon be excused in another—and a
lower tone of thought with regard to sin will rule the church. The toleration
of sin in the church soon leads to the excusing of it, and that to the free
indulgence of it, and to the bringing in of other sins yet more foul!
(Charles Spurgeon)
(Charles Spurgeon)
Ultimately
what happens if evil living is tolerated in the church?
The church
is destroyed and souls are lost.
