1 Corinthians 9:1-12

SPIRITUAL SEED AND MATERIAL HARVEST

SEMILLA ESPIRITUAL Y COSECHA MATERIAL

9 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?

Paul starts by giving his credentials as an apostle.

Paul’s apostleship was being attacked because he was not one of the original Twelve. The qualifications for an apostle were that he had been with Jesus during His earthly life and had seen the resurrection. Paul asserts that he had seen the resurrected Christ. Paul’s call was by a special act of Christ for a special mission to the Gentiles, which demanded special revelation.  Paul not only encountered Jesus personally on the road to Damascus, but several times during his ministry Jesus appeared to him to encourage him ...(Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

It is not surprising that the false teachers question his authority...what is surprising is that the church in Corinth believes their lies.

Are there apostles today? - ¿Hay apóstoles hoy en día?

The term “apostle” has several connotations in the NT.

1. those who were called by Jesus and followed Him during His earthly life

2. Paul called in a special vision on the road to Damascus

3. an ongoing gift in the church (cf. Eph. 4:11), which included several people (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

I believe Paul feels betrayed by the church in Corinth...after all, the evidence of his authority, is the existence of this church.

Note, It is no new thing for faithful ministers to meet with the worst treatment where they might expect the best. This church at Corinth had as much reason to believe, and as little reason to question, his apostolic mission, as any; they had as much reason, perhaps more than any church, to pay him respect. (Matthew Henry)

(Matthew Henry)

The evidence of Paul’s apostleship was the numerous churches he had formed, of which Corinth was one... A seal in the ancient world was a warm blob of wax into which a signet ring was pressed to seal a letter or package. It was an assurance that the contents had not been opened; it showed who owned the contents; and it showed the genuineness of the contents, that it was sent by the right person. This type of seal became a metaphor of Christian certainty (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Paul was the Corinthians father in the faith...they carried his seal.

This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

The fact that the Corinthians believed in Jesus was Paul's defense against the false teachers.

Paul was being criticized by some group or theological faction at Corinth. They were claiming (1) that he was not a true apostle; (2) that he changed the Jerusalem apostles’ message; or (3) that he only preached for money. These charges are not specifically stated, but assumed from the historical setting and from the subjects Paul chose to address. (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Does this happen today? - ¿Pasa esto hoy en día?

Don’t we have the right to food and drink? Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers [James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon] and Cephas? Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk?

First, Paul is stating that Christian workers have the right to be supported by the church.

Second, Paul says he has a right to marry and receive support for his wife and children.

The apostle therefore plainly asserts he had a right to marry as well as other apostles, and claim a maintenance for his wife, nay, and his children too, if he had any, from the churches, without laboring with his own hands to procure it. (Matthew Henry)

Notice, the apostles were married and supported by the church. Does the church take care of its pastors today? What is average debt for seminary today?

Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing?

Paul now quotes scripture to support his teaching.

The Jewish way of settling the question was with an authoritative quote, if possibly from the writings of Moses (i.e. Gen. - Deut.); therefore, Paul quotes Deut. 25:4. (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Deuteronomy 25:4 Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

The scripture is always the determining factor for the followers of Jesus. do people always want to be guided by the scriptures?

For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.

Once again Paul states Pastors should be paid.

And, if the Jewish priesthood was maintained out of the holy things that were then offered, shall not Christ's ministers have a maintenance out of their ministry? Is there not as much reason that we should be maintained as they...It is the people's duty to maintain their minister, by Christ's appointment, though it be not a duty bound on every minister to call for or accept it. (Matthew Henry)

11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?

What is the spiritual seed? What does it produce? - ¿Cuál es la semilla espiritual?

Can we put a price on our salvation? What did our salvation cost? - ¿Podemos poner un precio en nuestra salvación? ¿Cuánto costó nuestra salvación?

...so the same pure and unmixed Gospel of Christ is to be preached, and that without keeping back anything that is profitable: and once more, as the sower, when he has cast his seed into the earth, waits long and with patience for its springing up and increase, so do the faithful dispensers of the Gospel: and what they sow or minister is of a spiritual nature; it comes from the Spirit of God, he is the ruler of it; he by his gifts qualifies men to preach it, and by his power makes it effectual to the souls of men; and through it conveys himself to them, as a spirit of regeneration and sanctification: the matter of the Gospel is spiritual; it contains spiritual doctrines, such as justification, pardon of sin, adoption, regeneration and are what concern the souls and spirits of men, and their spiritual and eternal welfare...(John Gill)

(John Gill)

How valuable is the Gospel to us? Do we treat the Gospel as a valuable?

But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

Was Paul paid by the Corinthian church? Why not?

Paul chose not to take advantage of his rights as a preacher of the gospel, possibly because of (1) his Jewish heritage or (2) the attacks of those who claimed he manipulated people for money. (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Do most pastors go into the ministry to make money? Because it is an easy way to make a living?!

I became a pastor because I wanted everyone to know Jesus...know that He is real...to believe in Him...live in a relationship with Him...and go to heaven.

Do you know and trust Jesus?  - ¿Conoces a Jesús y confías en Él?

Do you want to know and trust Jesus? - ¿Lo quieres conocer y confiar en Él?

And in all these we must prove the power of faith. If we have never begun to trust in Jesus, let us begin now. Oh, may the Eternal Spirit breathe faith into our souls! The beginning of true spiritual life is here—trusting what Christ has worked for us, relying upon His sufferings on our behalf. The continuation of spiritual life is here—trusting, still, in what Christ has done and is doing. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)
