1 Corinthians 10:1-14

10 For I
do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our
ancestors [Jews with Moses] were all under the cloud and that they all passed
through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the
cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and
drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied
them,
No quiero, hermanos, que olviden que
nuestros antepasados estuvieron todos bajo aquella nube, y que todos
atravesaron el Mar Rojo. 2 De ese modo, todos ellos quedaron unidos a
Moisés al ser bautizados en la nube y en el mar. 3 Igualmente, todos ellos
comieron el mismo alimento espiritual 4 y tomaron la misma bebida espiritual. Porque

“the cloud” This refers to the unique symbol of the presence of YHWH. It
was called by the rabbis the Shekinah cloud of glory. The Hebrew shekinah
meant “to dwell with.” YHWH was with His people during this period of
judgment in such intimate and caring ways that the rabbis began to call this
the “honeymoon” period between YHWH and Israel.(Bob Utely)

They all passed through the Red Sea when they fled
from Egypt. They ate manna and quail and drank water all provided by Yahweh.

way we have entered into the new covenant through the waters of baptism, and
have eaten Spiritual food and consumed Spiritual drink.

As the Jews followed Yahweh through the Red Sea...we
follow Jesus through our baptism. does this lead us out of trials?

God’s way of escape from trial is not for His people to
avoid it, so as not to pass through it, but such an escape as leads them

life-giving water during the wilderness wandering period. Paul sees an analogy
between God’s provision then and God’s life-giving provision now. Paul’s
theology viewed Christ as pre-existent and as the Father’s agent of life and
blessing. Jesus has always been God the Father’s fullest provision and greatest

5 Nevertheless, God was not
pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

This is an
attention-arresting understatement: all but two of that generation died.
Only those under twenty years of age and Joshua and Caleb (i.e. the two
spies who brought a positive faith report) entered the Promised Land. .. These
OT believers saw the miraculous provision of God. They knew His will through
their God-given leaders (i.e. Moses, Aaron, and Miriam), yet still they acted
in unbelief and rebellion. (Bob Utely)

examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

Notice that Paul is comparing OT covenant people and NT covenant people.
Evil is a recurrent problem. It can rob a human of eternal life, of intimate
fellowship with God. Evil corrupts every level of mankind’s existence.
Salvation does not free us of the struggle. ..Godliness, not information, is

7 Do not be idolaters, as some
of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got
up to indulge in revelry.”

This is the example of Aaron and the worship of

conduct of others of their own choosing. Something like this seems to have been
the case of the Corinthians; they murmured against Paul, and in him against
Christ, and seem to have set up other teachers, who would indulge and soothe
them in their inclinations, and particularly in a revolt to idolatry.

12 So, if you think you are
standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
