1 Corinthians 12:12-31
GOOD-BYE TO OUR PARTIAL AND PIECEMEAL LIVES
ADIOS A NUESTRAS
VIDAS PARCIALES Y FRAGMENTADAS.
12-13 You can easily
enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own
body. Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many
parts you can name, you’re still one body. It’s exactly the same with Christ.
By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal
lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered
into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in
everything.
o no judíos, esclavos o libres,
Paul
now addresses divisions over Spiritual GIFTS. Once again, pride is
surfacing...hence, Paul emphasizes unity in Christ.
This starts a
new paragraph that uses the inter-relationships of the human body as a
metaphor for the church . It emphasizes unity amidst diversity. The focus
is not on any part, but on the functioning whole; not the individual, but the family.
The OT and NT have a corporate emphasis. This is not meant to depreciate the
fact that people become Christians on an individual basis, but that once one
is a Christian, the focus is always the health, unity, and well-being of the
whole! (Bob
Utely)
(Bob Utely)
Is the well
being of the whole body priority in our church? In our lives? Are we living as
one body in Christ?
nuestra iglesia? ¿En nuestras vidas?
¿Estamos viviendo como un cuerpo en Cristo?
What
difference has Amazing Grace made in our lives?
vidas?
By
means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal
lives.
nuestras vidas parciales y fragmentadas.
(This is what we proclaimed
in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his
resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we
all come to drink.
fuimos
Paul alludes to the
Corinthians unity in the Spirit through Baptism and Holy Communion.
Christians become members
of this body by baptism: they are baptized into one body. The outward rite is
of divine institution, significant of the new birth, called therefore the
washing of regeneration,. But it is by the Spirit,
by the renewing of the Holy Ghost, that we are made members of Christ's body.
It is the Spirit's operation, signified by the outward administration, that
makes us members. And by communion at the other ordinance we are sustained;
but then it is not merely by drinking the wine, but by drinking into one
Spirit. (Matthew Henry)
(Matthew Henry)
We
are engrafted and sustained in the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit...Baptism
and Holy Communion are a means the Spirit uses. Are they the only
means?
usa. ¿Son
los únicos medios?
The Spirit
is the means by which God convicts people of sin, draws them to Christ,
baptizes them into Christ, and forms Christ in them. This is the age of the
Spirit. His activity is the sign
that the new age of righteousness has come. The gift is the Spirit and the
Spirit gives gifts which reflect His task of revealing Christ, drawing the lost
to Christ, and forming Christlikeness in believers.. .This term was used of
irrigating water. It literally meant “saturated.” This was interpreted as
referring to the Lord’s Supper by Augustine, Luther, and Calvin. (Bob Utely)
Lutero, y Calvin. (Bob Utely)
Do we
realize we are living in the AGE OF THE SPIRIT? Do we live our lives saturated
by the Spirit? When do you feel saturated by the Holy Spirit?
¿Vivimos nuestras vidas
saturadas por el Espíritu? ¿Cuándo se
sienten saturados por el Espíritu?
The old labels we once used
to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer
useful. We need something larger,
more comprehensive.
What the
Corinthians were before does not matter any longer. What does matter, is life
in the body of Christ.
Cristo.
This
equality would have been shocking to Roman society in Corinth, where the man
was the supreme authority over (1) his
wife; (2) his children; and (3) his domestic slaves. There was a rigid social
hierarchy. Paul’s radical theology, based on Jesus’ teachings and actions,
was a drastic paradigm shift and shocking new world-view which had to be lived
out in the fellowship of the church. It is specifically in this area that the
church at Corinth was failing. (Bob Utely)
(Bob Utely)
Does it
matter what we were before we accepted Christ?
WE ARE ALL
ONE IN CHRIST JESUS!!!
TODOS SOMOS UNO EN CRISTO JESUS!!!
14-18 I want you
to think about how all this makes you more significant, not less. A body isn’t
just a single part blown up into something huge. It’s all the
different-but-similar parts arranged and functioning together. If Foot said,
“I’m not elegant like Hand, embellished with rings; I guess I don’t belong to
this body,” would that make it so? If Ear said, “I’m not beautiful like Eye,
limpid and expressive; I don’t deserve a place on the head,” would you want to
remove it from the body? If the body was all eye, how could it hear? If all
ear, how could it smell? As it is, we see that God has carefully placed each part
of the body right where he wanted it.
no podríamos oír.
Paul emphasizes the
importance of each member of the church and that ultimately it is God's
decision.
We may plainly perceive the
divine wisdom in the distribution of the members; but it was made according to
the counsel of his will; he distinguished and distributed them as he pleased.
So is it also in the members of Christ's body: they are chosen out to such
stations, and endued with such gifts, as God pleases. He who is sovereign Lord
of all disposes his favors and gifts as he will.
(Matthew Henry)
Is
there any room for personal pride in this context?
contexto?
19-24 But I also
want you to think about how this keeps your significance from getting blown up
into self-importance. For no matter how significant you are, it is only because
of what you are a part of. An enormous eye or a gigantic hand wouldn’t
be a body, but a monster. What we have is one body with many parts, each its
proper size and in its proper place. No part is important on its own. Can you
imagine Eye telling Hand, “Get lost; I don’t need you”? Or, Head telling Foot,
“You’re fired; your job has been phased out”? As a matter of fact, in practice
it works the other way—the “lower” the part, the more basic, and therefore
necessary. You can live without an eye, for instance, but not without a
stomach. When it’s a part of your own body you are concerned with, it makes no
difference whether the part is visible or clothed, higher or lower. You give it
dignity and honor just as it is, without comparisons. If anything, you have
more concern for the lower parts than the higher. If you had to choose,
wouldn’t you prefer good digestion to full-bodied hair?
19 Si
Every member of the body of
Christ serves a purpose. Is one member more important than another?
So it is in the body of
Christ; its members must have different uses, and therefore have different
powers, and be in different places, some having one gift, and others a
different one. Variety in the members of the body contributes to the beauty of
it. What a monster would a body be if it were all ear, or eye, or arm! So it is
for the beauty and good appearance of the church that there should be diversity
of gifts and offices in it.(Matthew Henry)
ella. (Matthew Herny)
Do you see the beauty of the
different gifts here at Amazing Grace?
25-26 The way God
designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a
church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the
parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts,
every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part
flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.
If we cut our foot, does it
only affect the foot? In the same way, when one part of the church hurts we
should all hurt. Is this the case at Amazing Grace?
How do we protect the unity
of the body?
¿Cómo protejemos la unidad del cuerpo?
All decays of this affection
are the seeds of division. Where Christians grow cold towards each other,
they will be careless and unconcerned for each other. And this mutual disregard
is a division begun. The members of the natural body are made to have a care
and concern for each other, to prevent a division in it. So should it be in
Christ's body; the members should sympathize with each other. As in the natural
body the pain of the one part afflicts the whole, the ease and pleasure of one
part affects the whole, so should Christians reckon themselves honored in the
honors of their fellow-Christians, and should suffer in their sufferings.
(Matthew Henry)
(Matthew Henry)
We protect the unity of the
body by loving one another.
27-31 You are
Christ’s body—that’s who you are! You must never forget this. Only as you
accept your part of that body does your “part” mean anything. You’re familiar
with some of the parts that God has formed in his church, which is his “body”:
27 Pues
primer lugar,
apostles- apóstoles
prophets/teachers- profetas; maestros
miracle workers-
personas que hacen milagros. Do they exist today? e.g. healing of Joel Existen hoy?
ejemplo: sanación de Joel.
healers- otras que curan enfermos Do
they exist today? e.g. healing of Joel
Existen hoy? ejemplo: sanación de Joel.
helpers- o que ayudan e.g.
readers ejemplo: lectores
organizers- o que dirigen e.g. pastor Robyn and
Cyndi McCurley ejemplo: pastora Robyn y Cyndy McCurley
those who pray in tongues.- que hablan en lenguas/ ecstatic speech - habla extasiada
But it’s
obvious by now, isn’t it, that Christ’s church is a complete Body and not a
gigantic, one dimensional Part? It’s not all Apostle, not all Prophet, not all
Miracle Worker, not all Healer, not all Prayer in Tongues, not all Interpreter
of Tongues.
Paul has mentioned these
“divisions” before (cf. 1:10; 11:18). They are the basic problem in Corinth.
The divisions were related to (1) certain leaders; (2) certain theological
emphases; (3) Roman social standing; (4) magnification of certain gifts; or (5)
residue of a pagan mind set. (Bob Utely)
Pablo mencionó estas "divisiones" antes (cf. 1:10; 11:18). Son los problemas básicos de Corintios. Las divisiones eran relacionadas con (1)
ciertos líderes; (2) ciertos énfasis teológicos; (3) posición social romana;
mente. (Bob Utely)
So today Paul is saying, "Parts are parts." We
are all one in Christ Jesus!
Así que hoy
Pablo está diciendo, "Partes son partes." Nosotros somos uno en Cristo Jesús!
So Pastor, what is my part?
Así que,
Pastor, ¿cuál es mi parte?
There
is some little part, my Brother or Sister, which you are to take in the great
Church of Christ. You may not be always able to tell what it may be, but still
there is a place for you to fill!
There is a linchpin in a chariot—who thinks much about or thanks that pin?
Indeed, it is so very small and insignificant, who would imagine it is
necessary to the locomotion or speed? The wheels carry it around, but who would
suppose that if it were taken away, the wheel would fly off? Perhaps you are
like one of these little linchpins which keep the wheel right. You may not know
what use you are, but, possibly, you prevent someone else from turning aside.
Let us each keep in our station, endeavoring, God helping us, to exert the
influence which He has given us.(Charles Spurgeon)
Cristo. Tal vez no siempre puedan decir
(Charles Spurgeon)
And yet
some of you keep competing for so-called “important” parts.
Should
we compete for Spiritual gifts? Can someone teach us a Spiritual gift?
¿Deberíamos competir por los dones Espirituales? ¿Puede alguien enseñarnos un don Espiritual?
This is an
important passage in refuting the theological overstatement that “tongues” is a
gift for every believer, a sort of confirming sign of salvation and/or a
special mark of true spirituality. It is a
valid gift, but not for everyone. The other extreme is to reject “tongues” as
passing away in the Apostolic era. This is also a theological overstatement
. The whole point of this chapter is that there is one body, but many parts.
No one part (i.e. gift) is pre-imminent... The focus of this chapter is corporate.
The church should ask the Spirit for more of His giftedness (i.e. believers)
that proclaims the gospel and builds up the body. (Bob Utely)
cuerpo. (Bob Utely)
What
is the purpose of Spiritual gifts?
TO
PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL AND TO BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST!
But now I want to lay out a
far better way for you.
PROCLAMAR
EL EVANGELIO Y EDIFICAR EL CUERPO DE CRISTO! Pero ahora yo quiero proponer una
mejor manera para ustedes.
Next
week we will discuss this better way...Which is?
La semana entrante discutiremos una mejor manera...
¿cuál es?
I have come into the church to be a member of a body.
What is my office? Every member has its own special office in the body—it is
not there merely for its own comfort, but to be a help to the whole system of
which it forms a part. What, then, can I do?” The question which we should each
one ask of the Lord is that which Saul asked on the way to Damascus, “Lord, what will
You have me to do?” (Charles
Spurgeon)
He venido a
(Charles Spurgeon)
