1 Corinthians 15:1-11

THE STORM OF GRACE

LA TORMENTA DE GRACIA

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.

In Chapters 11 through 14 Paul has dealt with problems in worship in Corinth. Now Paul deals with false teaching. Where did Paul receive his message/Gospel?

Paul was passing on what he received (i.e. the gospel) from Christ. Before Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles, he was a receiver of the gospel himself... Although Jesus died for all human sin, it is obvious from this passage and others  that each person must personally receive God’s free offer of salvation. The gospel involves (1) the welcoming of a person; (2) believing truths about that person; and (3) living a life in imitation of that person.(Bob Utely)

Have we welcomed Christ into our hearts? Do we believe the truths about Him? Do we live in a relationship with Jesus and strive to be like Him?

Is it even important that we believe everything about Jesus?

The doctrine of Christ's death and resurrection is at the foundation of Christianity. Remove this foundation, and the whole fabric falls, all our hopes for eternity sink at once. And it is by holding this truth firmly that Christians are made to stand in a day of trial, and kept faithful to God. It was that alone by which they could hope for salvation , for there is no salvation in any other name; no name given under heaven by which we may be saved, but by the name of Christ. (Matthew Henry)

(Matthew Henry)

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

Is the Gospel a one-time experience?

There were those factions in Corinth who by their actions, attitudes, and theology showed they were never believers! They rejected Paul’s gospel, Paul’s Apostolic authority and merged the gospel into Roman culture, whereby the culture became dominant! Cultural Christianity is always weak and sometimes not Christian! However, please note that contextually Paul is asserting his confidence that he has that the Corinthian believers are true believers... (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Does cultural Christianity exist today?

¿Existe la cultura del cristianismo hoy?

A cultural is a nominal Christian.

Una cultura es un cristiano nominal.

A nominal Protestant Christian is one who, within the Protestant tradition, would call himself a Christian, or be so regarded by others, but who has no authentic commitment to Christ based on personal faith. Such commitment involves a transforming personal relationship with Christ, characterized by such qualities as love, joy, peace, a desire to study the Bible, prayer, fellowship with other Christians, a determination to witness faithfully, a deep concern for God’s will to be done on earth, and a living hope in heaven to come.(Eddie Gibbs)

(Eddie Gibbs)

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles,

Paul’s gospel summary:

1. Christ died for our sins

2. Christ was truly dead and buried

3. Christ was raised from the dead

4. We know these are true because He appeared to many people over many days. (Bob Utely)

El resumen del evangelio de Pablo:

1. Cristo murió por nuestros pecados

2. Cristo murió verdaderamente y fue sepultado

3. Cristo fue resucitado de la muerte

(Bob Utely)

Paul is emphasizing that Jesus rose from the dead and is a living person...not simply a historical figure.

And that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. This is the GospelChrist dead, buried, risen again, always living... We must dwell upon these points, for they are the essentials of the Gospel. Notice that the preacher does not make the Gospel. If he makes it, it is not worth your having! Originality in preaching, if it is originality in the statement of doctrine, is falsehood! We are not makers and inventorswe are repeaterswe tell the message we have received. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

Do all churches worship a LIVING Christ? Do we worship a LIVING Christ?

¿Todas la iglesias adoran un Cristo VIVO? ¿Adoramos nosotros un Cristo VIVO?

and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

What does Paul mean by abnormally born?

¿Qué quiere decir Pablo con nacido anormalmente?

And last of all He was seen of me, also, as of one born out of due time. Paul calls himself an abortion and speaks of himself as one hardly worth mentioning. Yet he had seen the Lord after His Resurrection from the dead. He was not a man to be deceived, for he had persecuted the Church of Christ. He was exceedingly mad against the Messiah, so that if he said that he had seen Jesus of Nazareth, and that he was converted by the sight, we may be quite sure that it was so. Paul was not a man to undergo all the sacrifices he had to endure for the sake of a mere dream. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

The transformation of Saul/Paul is evidence of the truth of the Gospel/resurrection. What evidence do we have with us today of Jesus' resurrection?

We have all been abnormally born in Christ.

Todos nosotros hemos nacido anormalmente en Cristo.

Once more, there are some who are “born out of due time” because they are born all of a sudden. They suddenly come to Christ. They suddenly find peace. They are suddenly saved. I wish that might happen to some here tonight. There is no need of any set period for this all-important matter! Time is no element in the matter. God can work conviction and conversion in a single instant. You know that, sometimes, you see a flash of lightning and then you wait several seconds before you hear the thunder. But when a storm is right overhead, the flash and the slap are simultaneous, and down comes the pouring rain at the same time! And, in like manner, the Lord knows how to send a flash of conviction and, at the same instant, to make His deep voice of mercy to be heard in the soul—and to send the floods of Grace upon the spirit then and there! Why should He not do so tonight for any of you who need these blessings? (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

We have all been abnormally born in a storm of Grace.

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11 Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

His point is that God’s grace proved effective in Paul’s ministry, of which the Corinthian church itself was an evidence and result... Paul has no quarrel with the Twelve. He just clearly asserts his own calling and authority!...Paul asserts that he worked harder than the other Apostles, but he also knew that God was the source, not himself. (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

The following scripture describes Paul...and maybe us...

La siguiente escritura describe a Pablo... y talvez a nosotros...

Luke 7:47Amplified Bible (AMP) 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, many [as they are], are forgiven her—because she has loved much. But he who is forgiven little loves little.

Does Paul take credit for starting the Corinthian church, working miracles, teaching and preaching?

Paul admits it was by the power/grace of God.

It cannot be denied that the living child of God has power, but it must not be forgotten that the power of the living child of God is not in himself, but in his Heavenly Father. For it is as true of him as of any sinner—dead in trespasses and sinsthat, without Christ, he can do nothing. The living child of God is still as powerless as the dead sinner apart from the constant indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the constant inflowing of the Divine Life into his soul. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

Paul knew who he was and didn't try to mask over it...He was real and no afraid to reveal his true self to the church. Are we afraid to be real in the church? Do we wear masks?

Take the meanest lamb in Jesus’ fold, the feeblest heir of Grace, the most timid and fearing—the most hopeless and helpless of all disciples, the man most devoid of talent, the man who stands the very lowest on the list of the saints of God—surely he may and must say that by the Grace of Godhe is what he is, so far as he is in Christ—a Believer, with all the privileges that Believers have a gracious right to claim! Let this be your comfort, you little ones, that the same Grace that made an Apostle of Paul has made a Christian of you.  (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)
