2 ¹ So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you. ² For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? ³ I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

2 Por esto decidí no hacerles otra visita que les causara tristeza. ² Porque si yo los entristezco, ¿quién hará que me sienta alegre, de no ser ustedes, a quienes he entristecido? ³ Por eso les escribí como lo hice, porque no quería ir para que me entristecieran ustedes, que más bien deberían alegrarme. Paul restates in more detail why he changed his plans and didn't visit the Corinthians. He had written a harsh letter, 1Corinthians, and many theologians believe he visited the church and reprimanded them harshly. Paul didn't want to do it again...he needed space and time to cool down. Paul wanted to amend the situation then he could visit them with joy. Have we ever needed to back away from a situation to cool down? What happens when we don't take time to cool down?

Pablo reafirma con más detalle por qué cambió sus planes y no visitó a los Corintios. Había escrito una carta dura, 1Corinthians, y muchos teólogos creen su visita a la iglesia y los reprendió con severidad. Pablo no quería hacerlo de nuevo ... necesitaba el espacio y el tiempo para enfriarse. 2 Timothy 4:1-3 4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: ² Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. ³ For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

⁴ For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Paul is addressing the difficulty of church discipline. Do churches today even practice church discipline? Why or why not?

⁵ If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. ⁶ The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.

This refers to 1 Cor. 5 and the man who married his father's wife.

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. ² And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? ³ For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. ⁴ So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, ⁵ hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.⁶ Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? ⁷ Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. ⁸ Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. ⁹ I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— ¹⁰ not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. ¹¹ But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. ¹² What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? ¹³ God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

Este caso de inmoralidad es tan grave, que ni siquiera se da entre los paganos. ² ¡Y aún se hinchan ustedes de orgullo! ¡Deberían llenarse de tristeza! El hombre que vive en semejante situación debe ser expulsado de entre ustedes. ³ En cuanto a mí, aunque en el cuerpo no estoy presente entre ustedes, lo estoy en el espíritu; y, como si estuviera presente, he dado ya mi sentencia sobre aquel que así actúa. ⁴ Cuando ustedes se reúnan, yo estaré con ustedes en espíritu, y también el poder de nuestro Señor Jesús estará con ustedes. Con gente así, ni siquiera comer juntos. ^12-13 No me toca a mí juzgar a los de fuera; Dios será quien los juzgue. Pero ustedes ya están juzgando a los de dentro. Por eso, quiten a ese pecador de en medio de ustedes.

You can see why Paul didn't want to have to address this situation again and therefore changed his plans. But does Paul want the offender to go to hell for his sin? Is that the purpose of the discipline? No it's about restoration.

Usted puede ver por qué Pablo no quiere tener que enfrentar esta situación de nuevo y por lo tanto cambió sus planes. Pero quiere Pablo que el delincuente sera enviado al infierno por su pecado? Es eso el propósito de la disciplina? No se trata de la restauración.

Is this how church discipline is usually applied? No ...in many cases the church members refuse to forgive and forget.

⁷ Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸ I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

In this case the man has repented and desired to re-enter the church fellowship.

En este caso, el hombre se ha arrepentido y se desea volver a entrar en la comunión de la iglesia.

Paul tells the church to forgive and forget...and even to reaffirm their LOVE for this brother. Does this happen today? And what happens when the church ostracizes someone and doesn't forgive? Does it just hurt the offender? No it hurts the witness of the church to the community. Jesus said:

Pablo le dice a la iglesia de perdonar y olvidar ... y hasta para reafirmar su amor por el hermano. ¿Esto sucede hoy? Y qué sucede cuando la iglesia ostracizes alguien y no perdona? No esta herida el delincuente? No le duele el testimonio de la iglesia a la comunidad. Jesús dijo:

Luke 17:2-4 ² It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. ³ So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. ⁴ Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Lucas 17:2-4 ² Mejor le sería que lo echaran al mar con una piedra de molino atada al cuello, que hacer caer en pecado a uno de estos pequeñitos. ³ ¡Tengan cuidado! »Si tu hermano peca, repréndelo; pero si cambia de actitud, perdónalo. ⁴ Aunque peque contra ti siete veces en un día, si siete veces viene a decirte: “No lo volveré a hacer”, debes perdonarlo.»

⁹ Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. ¹⁰ Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,

⁹ Ya antes les escribí sobre este asunto, precisamente para probarlos y saber si están dispuestos a seguir mis instrucciones. ¹⁰ Así que aquel a quien ustedes perdonen algo, también yo se lo perdono. Y se lo perdono, si es que había algo que perdonar, por consideración a ustedes y en presencia de Cristo.

Why can Paul forgive this man? Because of Paul's love for Christ! Do we find it hard to forgive people? If so we must remember our love for Christ or more importantly His love and forgiveness for us.

¿Por qué puede Paul perdonar a este hombre? Debido al amor de Pablo por Cristo! Por qué nos resulta difícil perdonar a la gente? Si es así, debemos recordar nuestro amor por Cristo o que es más importante su amor y perdón para nosotros.

Paul affirms this in Colossians:

Colossians 3:12-14 ¹² Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. ¹³ Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. ¹⁴ And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Colosenses 3:12-14 ¹² Dios los ama a ustedes y los ha escogido para que pertenezcan al pueblo santo. Revístanse de sentimientos de compasión, bondad, humildad, mansedumbre y paciencia. ¹³ Sopórtense unos a otros, y perdónense si alguno tiene una queja contra otro. Así como el Señor los perdonó, perdonen también ustedes. ¹⁴ Sobre todo revístanse de amor, que es el lazo de la perfecta unión.

Love, the love of Christ, and forgiveness go hand in hand.

¹¹ in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

Satan gets the advantage of a great many Christians because they are unforgiving. There are two things that we don’t hear very often even in our conservative churches: we don’t hear folk admitting their sins and asking for forgiveness nor do we hear folk forgiving those who confess. There is an unforgiving spirit in many churches. We need to remember that we are all capable of any sin. Whatever the other man has done, we are also capable of doing. When such a man repents from his sin, he is to be restored in the spirit of meekness. He is to be brought back into fellowship. This is part of the ministry. (Jerry Shirley)

Satanás obtiene la ventaja de un gran número de cristianos porque son implacables. Matthew 6:15

But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Who is behind the man's incest and the unforgiveness by the church? Satan. We must always remember we are in a Spiritual war.

¿Quién está detrás del incesto del hombre y de la falta de perdón por la iglesia? Satán. Debemos recordar siempre que estamos en una guerra espiritual.

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Efesios 6:12 ¹² Porque no estamos luchando contra poderes humanos, sino contra malignas fuerzas espirituales del cielo, las cuales tienen mando, autoridad y dominio sobre el mundo de tinieblas que nos rodea.

It is interesting to know that Satan tempts both by inclination to evil and by the perversion of the good. An inappropriate, unforgiving, angry, or prideful attitude on the part of the church could open the door for Satan to disrupt the fellowship... The evil one tries to affect our lives. Often believers are ignorant of his schemes. (Bob Utely)

Es interesante saber que Satanás tienta tanto por la inclinación al mal y por la perversión del bien. Una actitud inadecuada, que no perdona, enojado, o orgulloso por parte de la iglesia podría abrir la puerta a Satanás para interrumpir la comunión ... El maligno intenta afectar nuestras vidas. A menudo, los creyentes son ignorantes de sus esquemas. (Bob Utely)

Are we ignorant of the spiritual battle raging about us? Do we see with kingdom eyes and discern accordingly? Or do we judge events by worldly standards? We are called to be different from the world.

Somos ignorantes de la batalla espiritual embravecido sobre nosotros? Cómo vemos con los ojos del reino y discernir en consecuencia? ¿O nos juzgamos eventos por los estándares del mundo? Estamos llamados a hay diferencia con el mundo.

In regard to forgiveness: En en relación al perdón:

1. Take time to pray and cool down.

2. Remember how the Lord has forgiven us.

3. Forgive in love...the love of Christ.

4. Ask the Spirit to wash clean our memory so we can forgive and forget.

5. An unforgiving spirit is not of Christ but of the devil.

1. Tome tiempo para orar.
2. Recuerde que el Señor nos ha perdonado.
3. Perdonar con amor ... el amor de Cristo.
4. Pide al Espíritu que lavar limpiar nuestra memoria para que podamos perdonar y olvidar.
5. Un espíritu que no perdona no es de Cristo, sino del diablo.
