2 Corintios 7:2-16

A GOOD CRY

 Un buen llanto

Paul starts by proclaiming his innocence in regard to the charges of the false prophets. He hasn't done anything for personal gain with this church. On the contrary he is worried sick about this church.

Have you ever been worried sick about someone but they misjudge your motives, when your only motive is love and concern? This is what Paul is dealing with.

Paul didn't water down his message to this church because quite frankly it was a mess. He describes some of their problems in 1Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Do  these sins exist in the church today? are they addressed from the pulpit?

EG. UCC - We choose the side of love...

POR EJEMPLO. UCC - Elegimos el lado del amor ...

Paul confronts their sin and reminds them who they are:

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

In response to Paul's rebuke what did the Corinthian Christians do? Did they leave the church? No we see there must be a change because Paul is proud of this church now.

Does hearing God's Word here change our behavior?

This refers to problems with believers within the church and unbelievers outside of the church. What causes the most problems for pastors and church leaders today? Those within or those outside?

What a wonderful title for God-"the One who continually comforts".

Why was Paul concerned about Titus?

He was troubled when he did not meet with Titus at Troas, and afterwards when for some time he did not meet with him in Macedonia: this was a grief to him, because he could not hear what reception he met with at Corinth, nor how their affairs went forward. (Matthew Henry)

(Matthew Henry)

The church at Corinth heeded Paul's honest rebuke and changed. One of a pastor's greatest joys is seeing people's lives changed. That's what keeps me going.

EG. Jail pastors joy when inmates come here and their live are changed.

The last term (i.e., metanoeia), found in 2 Cor. 7:9 and 10, is extremely significant theologically. Literally, it means "alter mind." It not only involves a change of attitude, but a change of action. Examples of this type of repentance can be found in King David and the Apostle Peter.(Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Paul had confronted this church with their sin and they accepted his message and confessed their sin with godly sorrow and repented.

How greatly he rejoiced at their repentance, and the evidences thereof. The apostle was sorry that he had grieved them... or that it was needful he should make those sorry whom he would rather have made glad. But now he rejoiced, when he found they had sorrowed to repentance. Their sorrow in itself was not the cause of his rejoicing; but the nature of it, and the effect of it (repentance unto salvation), made him rejoice...Their sorrow was but for a season; it was turned into joy, and that joy was durable. (Matthew Henry)

(Matthew Henry)

Is this what pastors and churches do today? No. There is no honesty in regard to sin which means there is no Godly sorrow, repentance, or joy.

I preach against drugs and alcohol all the time here...including marijuana...they are all poison...

EG. There is no such thing as a safe level of alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a toxin that kills cells such as microorganisms, which is why we use it to preserve food and sterilize skin, needles etc. Alcohol kills humans too. (The Guardian) It can be Spiritual poison also.... but I know there are people who leave here and continue in this sin and then wonder why there is no joy in their lives.

Repentance= It is an entire and total change of mind, a turning of the mind right round, so that it hates what once it loved and loves what once it hated—it forms different judgments from what it always did before—and no longer puts bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter, darkness for light and light for darkness. It judges righteous judgment, for the change of mind is thorough and complete! And therefore I say that there is no repentance that is worth anything which is not accompanied by sorrow for sin.(Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

When is the last time we have experienced Godly sorrow? When was the last time we wept over our sins? Who do we really hurt with our sins? God

Dios

Psalm 51:3-4 For I know my transgressions,  and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

Salmos 51:3-4 3 (5) Reconozco que he sido rebelde;mi pecado no se borra de mi mente. 4 (6) Contra ti he pecado, y sólo contra ti, haciendo lo malo, lo que condenas. Por eso tu sentencia es justa;
irreprochable tu juicio.

Luke 15: 21 21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

Ultimately all of our sins are sins against Jesus...the one who died on  a cross for our sins. When we realize the pain we cause Jesus this leads to Godly sorrow and repentance and joy. I believe we could all use some Godly sorrow...we need to have a GOOD CRY...and what happens after we have a good cry...we feel cleansed...we feel joy.

Paul is filled with joy over the Corinthians response. The tone of this letter is completely opposite of 1Corinthians. The Corinthians have experienced Godly sorrow, wept, repented, and are overflowing with joy...so much so that they infect Titus and Paul with this joy. not only are they restored into relationship with God but also with one another.

Whenever you have done wrong, go at once to your Heavenly Father with godly sorrow for

that sin—and get the sweet kiss of His forgiving love all over again! That is not wretchedness, it is happiness of the highest kind! It is the safest and surest way to maintain communion with God that I know of—(Charles Spurgeon)
