2 Corintios 8:1-15

GIVE AS YOU LOVE

DAR COMO AMAS

It all started with the grace of God for the Macedonian churches. And it always starts with the grace of God for us. We can't claim any credit. Everything we have and do comes to us as a gift of God.

No podemos reclamar ningún crédito.

What we do for God, God’s Grace has first bestowed upon us! If there is any virtue, if there is any zeal, if there is any faith, if there is any love, it is the result of the Grace of God bestowed upon us! Always look upon things in that light, for then you will not grow proud. Give what you may, and do what you may—you may regard it as the effect of the Grace of God bestowed upon you. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

Always to God be the glory! Siempre a Dios sea la gloria!

The churches in Macedonia were not rich. They were also under persecution. But they gave very generously to aid the poor Christians in Jerusalem. but they did not give out of excess...they gave beyond their excess. In fact the Macedonian churches wanted to be part of the relief effort for the churches in Jerusalem. Does this attitude exist in the church today?

EG. our sister churches support....and our support to Mexico, Africa, and Holbrook. Spurgeon expounds on this:

Our gifts are not to be measured by the amount we contribute, but by the surplus kept in our own hands. The two mites of the widow were, in Christ’s eyes, worth more than all the other money cast into the treasury, for, “she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

There are three ways to live life for people as well as churches:

1.    A Scarcity mentality...we have a limited supply so we have to be careful with every dime. When we live this way we live in fear and fear is not of God. Generally, people/churches who live this way are always short of money and they don't experience joy or freedom. The focus is the self.

2.    Entitlement mentality...this has developed in the last 100 years. When we live this way we believe we have rights to everything we want because we are victims of the system. They owe us. If we belong to a church we don't feel obligated to give because others will take care of it. We will enjoy all the services of the body of Christ but none of the responsibilities. When we live like this usually there is a complaining spirit and a shallow if not non-existent faith. There is no real joy, peace, or love. The focus is the self.

3.    A kingdom mentality...our Father owns everything and everyone and He loves us...God will provide everything we need. When we live this way we have peace, joy, hope, and freedom. We are free to be generous to be a gift to others. The focus is serving Jesus and others.

What mentality do we have? How do we live our lives?

¿Qué mentalidad tenemos? ¿Cómo vivimos nuestras vidas?

Stewardship involves everything we are and have. If you give yourself to the Lord there remains nothing to give! Christian stewardship is a thermometer of our spiritual maturity. Believers are owners of nothing and stewards of God in everything. This truth is sometimes easier for poor people to grasp and obey than wealthy people.(Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Have we given ourselves to the Lord? You be the judge, simply look at your check book and day-timer. Spurgeon states:

Spurgeon dice:

...remembering that “God loves a cheerful giver.”But these Macedonians gave more than money—they gave themselves. Paul writes, “They first gave themselves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.” This was the best donation—better, even, than the two mites of the poor widow. She gave her living, but they gave their lives, their very being! They also gave the best donation in the best way. They did not stop with giving themselves to the Lord, they also gave themselves to the Lord’s people. This is the will of God, that those who yield themselves up to Him should join those who are already His. (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

EG. many people say they tithe here, a tithe is one tenth of our income...I didn't know we had so many poor people in our church...they actually live on $10 per week...really, look at all the one dollar bills in the offering plate.

Have we given ourselves to the Lord?

Paul is using the generosity of the poor Macedonian churches to encourage the Corinthian church to be generous in their giving for the relief of the Jerusalem churches. He states that they have many spiritual gifts ; faith, speech, knowledge, honesty, and love. But now he asks them to be generous.

This church thought they already were rich (cf. 1 Cor. 4:8). Now the true definition of wealth is clearly spiritual and service-oriented, not self-seeking or intellectual, or materialistic. (Bob Utely)

(Bob Utely)

Our gifts are not to be measured by the amount we contribute, but by the surplus kept in our own hands... Not only did those Macedonian Believers give much, but they gave it willingly. “They were willing of themselves.” This added fragrance to their gift. They needed no pressing or urging—the Apostle did not have to organize a “Fancy Fair” to wheedle the money out of them, nor even to preach loud and long to awaken them to their duty. “They were willing of themselves.” (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

EG. pastors desire that you grow in Christ...as we grow in Christ we grow in giving...if we don't, it is a spiritual problem for you...we don't care about the money but we do care about your spiritual growth...your souls...they are interconnected.

Paul has used the generosity of the Macedonians to encourage the Corinthians in giving. Now he uses the generosity of Jesus to spur them on. How was Jesus rich? Jesus was God before the creation of all things.

Oh, can you tell the depths of the rivers of praise that flowed hard by the City of God? Can you imagine to yourselves the sweetness of that harmony that perpetually poured into the ears of Jesus, Messiah, King, and Eternal, equal with God His Father? ... (Charles Spurgeon)

... (Charles Spurgeon)

How did Jesus become poor? ¿Cómo Jesús se convierten en pobre?

He who had once been waited on by angels becomes the servant of servants, takes a towel, girds Himself and washes His disciples’ feet! He who was once honored with the hallelujahs of ages, is now spit upon and despised!... Oh for words to picture the humiliation of Christ! What leagues of distance between Him that sat upon the throne, and Him that died upon the cross! (Charles Spurgeon)

(Charles Spurgeon)

Ultimately we give because of Jesus. He loved us unto death and in response we love Him and live in Him and for Him. Our giving reflects our love for Jesus.

“My brethren,” he said, “there is One above, by whom you hope you have been saved, One whom you call Master and Lord. Now if you will but imitate Him, you cannot be ungenerous, for, my brethren, I tell you a thing which is an old thing with you and an undisputed truth—‘For

you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might be rich.’ Let this constrain you to benevolence.” O Christian, whenever you are inclined to a greedy withholding from the church of God, think of your Savior giving up all that He had to serve you and can you then, when you behold self-denial so noble—can you then be selfish and regard yourself? When the claims of the poor of the flock are pressed upon you, remember Jesus! Imagine you see Him look you in the face and say to you, “I gave Myself for you and do you withhold yourself from Me? If you do so, you know not My love in all its heights and depths and lengths and widths." (Charles Spurgeon)

"(Charles Spurgeon)

Previously the Corinthians made a commitment to the church in Jerusalem. Now Paul asks them to fulfill their commitment. Do we stand by the commitments we have made?

In this context, Paul is saying the churches should help one another. The Jerusalem church brought Christ to the Corinthians in their spiritual poverty. Now the Corinthians should help the Jerusalem church in its physical poverty.

EG. once again our relationship with our sister churches. Before I retire I would like Amazing Grace to be self sufficient...and a source of generosity to other churches.

In regard to giving, none of the pastors know what you give to the church as an individual. But today I encourage all of you to live generously.

No, the gift must be a free one, or it has lost all its sweetness. Yet this absence of law and rule does not mean that you are, therefore, to give less than the Jews did (10%), but rather that you shall give more because, if I rightly understand what is implied in the term, Christian generosity, it is to be according to the example of Christ Himself! ... That is to say, we should give as we love. You know how much our Lord Jesus Christ loved by knowing how much He gave. He gave Himself for us because He loved us with all the force and energy of His Nature.... I commend that rule to you —give as you love and measure your love by your gift!

 (Charles Spurgeon)

  (Charles Spurgeon)
