Filipenses 2: 5-11

Today’s lesson in Filipenses is actually a hymn that was sung in the early church. Through this song, Paul is urging the members at the church at Philippi to love one another and to remain united. Therefore, Paul encourages them to have the same mind of Christ. But how can we possibly have the mind of Christ? How can we possibly live life like Jesus lived His life? Friends, quite simply it is impossible for us to do it by our own efforts.

We need God’s help to live the life Jesus has planned for us. Doctor Morrissey writes, "Letting God be God or Christ be Christ means we give God permission to enter us and rule our lives. Obedience is really "letting be". It is not measuring up to external standards, but interior growth of the very power and nature of God." To have the mind of Jesus means we open our hearts and minds to Jesus so that he can enter in and guide us. The mind of Christ is not something we earn it is something we allow to enter us and change us.

Phillipe Vermier was a prisoner in a Nazi prison during World War Two. He compared us to lanterns that carry the light of Christ in order to light the world. We are not the fire that provides the light, we are simply the lanterns. Jesus is the fire that we carry within us that provides light to the world. What Saint Paul is telling the Philippians is to remain open to the light or fire of Jesus. He is saying DO NOT LOSE THE FIRE! Brothers and sisters, it is the same for us today. We must open ourselves to God’s word in order to receive the fire of Jesus. We need to be at worship regularly in addition to reading our Bibles at home and attending Bible Studies. The second Saturday in May, we will start a course of study at 5PM with nursery available for the children. This study will definitely open our hearts to the fire of Jesus. Please see me or Babbi to sign up for this course. Friends, please don’t lose the fire of Jesus.

Paul goes on to tell us that Jesus, who is God, left heaven and put on human flesh and even died for us that we might live. Friends, what amazing love God has for us that he would do such a thing for us. A poor comparison would be us becoming ants in order to save them. Martin Luther writes, "The mystery of Christ, that he sunk himself into our flesh, is beyond all human understanding." Brothers and sisters, do we realize how much God loves each and every one of us?

One of the ancient kings of Persia loved to dress up like a poor man so that he could mingle with his people. Once, dressed as a poor man, the king went deep into the cellar and talked to the fireman who kept the furnace burning. The fireman shared his lunch with the king and they talked for quite some time. The king enjoyed the poor man’s company so much that he returned many times to talk and eat with the man. They became very close friends. One day the king decided to tell the fireman who he really was and see what the man would ask for. So he did but the fireman did not ask for anything. The king was astonished and said;" Don’t you realize that I could give you anything…a city or a throne?" The man gently replied, "I understand your majesty. But you have already given the greatest gift a man could receive. You left your palace to sit with me here in this dark and lonely place. You could give nothing more precious. You have given yourself and that is far more than I could ever deserve." Friends, in an even greater way Christ has given himself for us. Do we accept Him?

Paul finishes by declaring that one day absolutely every one and every thing will declare JESUS IS LORD! But do we declare Jesus is Lord by the way we live our lives? Or are we just like people who do not believe in Jesus and live their lives their way? Can people tell we are Christians by how we live?

Hamilton was a very rich lawyer in Florida. One day he was in a minor car accident and received some minor injuries, but the next day in the paper it said he had died. He read his death notice in the paper and at first he laughed. But then he started to think, what the world would be like without him. Would he even be missed? Would there be anything left behind to show that his life made a difference? After much prayer he left his law practice and took his family to Bethesda orphanage where he and his wife became parents of a group home for twenty boys ages 5 to 18. Now Hamilton says, "I’m where God wants me to be, in a life that began in an obituary; instead of ending in an obituary."

Brothers and sisters, our purpose is to carry the fire of Jesus in life just like Hamilton in order to light this world. Let’s catch God’s fire. Amen.

Oremus: Heavenly Father, you sent Jesus in the flesh to die for us and rise so that we can live forever with you. Lord, give us the mind of Jesus…we open our hearts to your holy fire… enter our hearts and change us that we may be lanterns that shine your light brightly in the darkness…in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…Amen.
