San Juan 12: 20-33

In today’s gospel some Greeks come to Philip and ask to see Jesus. Philip takes the Greeks to Andrew and then the two disciples take the Greeks to see Jesus. But we see in the gospels that Philip and Andrew were always available to bring people to Jesus. Are we available to bring people to Jesus or do we make excuses? Do we say," I don’t do inviting?" Friends, this is a very poor excuse. In the Bible we see men and women who had servant hearts, minds, and spirits. And the world is a better place because:

Moses didn’t say, "I don’t do rivers."

Noah didn’t say, "I don’t do arks."

Jeremiah didn’t say, "I don’t do weeping."

Amos didn’t say, "I don’t do speeches."

Rahab didn’t say, "I don’t do carpets."

Ruth didn’t say, "I don’t do mother-in-laws."

David didn’t say, "I don’t do giants."

Mary didn’t say, "I don’t do virgin births."

John didn’t say, "I don’t do deserts."

Peter didn’t say, "I don’t do gentiles."

Paul didn’t say, "I don’t do letters."

Jesus didn’t say, "I don’t do crosses."

God wants us to be available for his use. He wants us to obey the command to make disciples of all people. When he called me to preach the gospel in Spanish; I didn’t say, "I don’t do Spanish Lord." I said, "Here I am Lord." Friends, today Jesus is calling us to bring people to Him. How will we respond?

Next we hear Jesus say,"When I am lifted up above the earth I will make everyone want to come to me." And when we come to Jesus, he loves us too much to let us remain the same. He loves us too much to have us remain in our sins.

One man who learned that to be lifted by Jesus means to change was a man named John Newton. John was a wealthy slave trader. He made his living in the eighteenth century by transporting slaves from Africa to America and selling them. John became a very wealthy man by selling people as property. When Jesus lifted him up John changed. He spent the rest of his life working to abolish the slave trade. He also wrote some hymns to be sung in church including Amazing Grace. It goes like this, "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound! That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind but now I see." John Newton died to himself and was raised by Christ.

Friends, what do we need to die too today? If we are willing to die to ourselves, to our sins, and turn to Jesus then He will lift us up. Like John Newton we do not have to remain in the darkness. We can be raised up to a new life in and with Jesus. But it seems we prefer the darkness and we want to play it safe. We find it hard to take risks for Jesus. We can take a chance on a new car or a new job but to follow this Jesus means we will have to change. We do not like to change… even if change means leaving the darkness of this world to enter into the light and life and love of Christ.

In the news this past week there was a story of a Christian in Afghanistan. His name is Abduhl Rahman. Abduhl became a Christian sixteen years ago. Now he is in prison because it is illegal to be a Christian in this Moslem country. The penalty for being a Christian in Afghanistan is death. Yet Abduhl refuses to deny Christ even when facing death. What would we do in his situation? Would we risk following Jesus or take the easy way? Brothers and sisters, Jesus calls us to the way of the cross and not the easy way. He wants us to die to self and change no matter what the costs.

Finally, we see that a voice sounds from heaven but not everyone recognizes it as the voice of God. Some people believe it is thunder. They don’t hear God’s voice and his message. Do we believe God still talks to us today or do we believe it is impossible and it is nonsense.

Tony Campolo, a Christian speaker, was going to speak at a Christian college. Before he spoke it was the custom at this college to lay on hands and pray for the speaker. When the teachers started praying for Tony suddenly one teacher started to pray for Charlie Stoltz. The teacher prayed that Charlie, who lived a block from the school, would not leave his wife and three children. He prayed that God would send an angel who would intervene.

Tony respondió, "Jesús me envió!".

Well, Tony was a little annoyed that they were praying for Charlie when he had to speak but he let them finish. After Tony’s speech, he left and was driving down the road when he saw a man walking down the street in the darkness. Now usually Tony would drive by and leave the man. But this night it was raining and he felt a strong impulse to stop and pick the stranger up. When he stopped and the man sat down in his car they introduced themselves to each other. The man said his name was Charlie Stoltz. Tony turned his car around and told Charlie he was taking him home to his wife and three children. Charlie was surprised and asked Tony who had sent him. Tony replied, "God sent me!"

Friends, God still speaks to us today if we have ears to hear. In fact God has called each and everyone one of us here to this place today. Didn’t we hear a voice or feel a desire to come to this place to worship this morning. That is the Holy Spirit. Now God may have spoken through our spouse or parents or children telling us to come here. But please make no mistake. God has brought each and every one of us here today for his purpose. Amen.

Oremus: Lord Jesus you died on a cross for us in order to lift us up to you. Please grant us ears to hear and eyes to see you. Empower us to be changed and to be your faithful witnesses like Abduhl…in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…Amen.
