San Marcos 8: 31-38
Amigos, en el evangelio de hoy, Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que El va a ir a Jerusalén a ser castigado por los líderes religioso y crucificado en la cruz, pero que al tercer día resucitará de la muerte. En escencia, lo que Jesús les está diciendo es que Dios nos ama lo suficiente para sufrir, morir y resucitar a una nueva vida, todo por nosotros. Pero ellos no entienden lo profundo del amor de Dios. ¿No somos nosotros igual que los discípulos? Cuando pasan cosas malas, ¿no señalamos a Dios y lo culpamos? Se nos olvida que Dios es amor.
Friends in today’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to Jerusalem to be punished by the religious leaders and killed on a cross but then in three days he will rise from the dead. In essence Jesus is telling them that God loves us all enough to suffer, die, and rise to new life for us. But they do not understand. The disciples do not understand the depth of God’s love. And aren’t we the same as the disciples? When bad things happen don’t we point the finger at God and blame him. We forget that God is love.
Hace muchos años, un pastor paró en la casa de un granjero para pedir un vaso con agua. Mientras bebia, notó una veleta en el techo del granero, que estaba dando vueltas con el viento. En la veleta estaban escritas las palabras: "Dios es amor". El pastor dijo al hombre, "Yo no creo que esta sea una buena forma de hablar del amor de Dios. ¿Estas diciendo que el amor de Dios cambia siempre, dependiento como sopla el viento?" El granjero contestó: "No, esa veleta está diciendo que no importa hacia donde sopla el viento, Dios es amor". Hermanos y hermanas, recuerden que no importa hacia donde sopla el viento en nuestras vidas. Dios es amor. Dios está siempre con nosotros y nos ama.
Many years ago a pastor stopped at a farmer’s house to get a drink of water. As he was drinking he noticed a weather vane on top of the barn spinning in the wind. On the weather vane were written the words "God is love". The pastor said to the man, "I do not believe that is a very good way to talk about God’s love. Are you saying God’s love is always changing depending on how the wind blows?" The farmer replied, "No that weather vane is saying no matter which way the wind blows, God is love." Brothers and sisters, please remember that no matter which way the wind blows in our lives, God Is love. God is always with us and he loves us.
Seguido, vemos que Pedro tienta a Jesús, para que huya del sufrimiento y la muerte, y Jesús reboca a Pedro. Jesús le dice a Pedro que está hablando como la gente del mundo, la gente en la cultura que nos rodea, y no pensando en el plan de Dios. Hoy en día, somos enseñados por nuestra cultra a estar enfocados en lo que nosotros queremos y no en lo que Dios quiere para nosotros. En nuestra cultura el individuo siempre sabe lo que es lo mejor para ellos. Pero en realidad, ¿sabemos lo que es mejor para nosotros si estamos separados de Jesús?. La respuesta es NO!
Next we see that Peter tempts Jesus to turn away from suffering and death, and Jesus rebukes Peter. Jesus tells Peter that he is thinking like the people of the world, the people in the surrounding culture, and not thinking of God’s plan. Today we are taught by our culture to focus on what we want and not what God wants for us. In our culture the individual always knows what is best for them. But in reality, do we really know what is best for us if we are living separated from Jesus. The answer is no.
Dos niños pequeños estaban hablando el uno con el otro, cuando uno dijo, "¿Sabías que el sol es el centro del universo y que todo gira alrededor del sol?". La niña respondió, "¿Estas seguro? Yo creo que todo gira alrededor de mi". Esta es la actitud de nuestra cultura. Nos hace el centro de la creación en lugar de Jesús. Hermanos y hermanas, hoy estoy acá para decirles NOSOTROS NO SOMOS EL CENTRO DEL UNIVERSO. JESUS, EL HIJO DE DIOS, ES EL CENTRO DEL UNIVERSO. En Colosences, Pablo escribe, "El Hijo de Dios fue antes que todo lo demás y por El todo se sostiene junto." Nosotros necesitamos que Jesús sea el centro de nuestras vidas para poder realmente experimentar la vida y para soster nuesras vidas juntas.
Two little children were talking to one another when one said, "Did you know the sun is the center of the universe and that everything revolves around the sun?" The little girl responded, "Are you sure? I thought everything revolved around me." This is the attitude of our culture. It makes us the center of creation rather than Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I am here today to say WE ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE. JESUS THE SON OF GOD IS THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE. In Colossians Paul writes, "God’s Son was before all else, and by him everything is held together." We need Jesus to be the center of our lives in order to really experience life and in order to hold our lives together.
Amigos, la vida con Jesús significa que seamos diferentes a este mundo. Debemos levantarnos por encima de lo que esta cultura nos ofrece y debemos vivir para Cristo. Estos significa quitar nuestra vista de lo que nosotros mismos queremos y enfocarnos en lo que Jesús quiere para nuestras vidas. Seguir a Jesús no es fácil, requiere que tomemos nuestra cruz y muramos a nosotros mismos. Cuando llevamos una cruz, la voluntad de Dios viene primero a nuestras vidas. ¿Es Jesús la prioridad número uno en nuestras vidas? Si no, ¿qué dioses falsos estamos adorando? ¿Es sexo, envidia, drogas, alcohol, apuestas, odio, etc.? ¿Quién es nuestro Dios? Si estamos sirviendo otros dioses, incluyendo sólo nuestras mismas vidas, entonces estamos perdiendo la vida aquí y ahora y la vida eterna también.
Friends, life with Jesus means that we are to be different than this world. We are to rise above what the culture offers us and we are to live for Christ. This means we take our eyes off our own selfish wants and we focus on what Jesus wants for our lives. To follow Jesus is not easy, it means taking up our cross and dying to our self. When we bear a cross, God’s will comes first in our lives. Is Jesus the first priority in our lives? If not, then what false gods are we worshipping? Is it sex, envy, drugs, alcohol, gambling, hatred, etc. Who is our God? If we are serving other gods, including just ourselves, then we are missing life here and now and eternal life also.
Cada Sábado por la noche, un grupo de Cristianos sirven en un lugar de comida para personas pobres en una ciudad grande. Antes de abrir las puertas, estos Crisitanos se juntan alrededor de la comida y se toman de las manos y oran. María, una mujer que antes era pobre y no tenía casa, dirigió la oración. Ella oró, "Señor Jesús nosotros sabemos que tu estarás viniendo por esta cola esta noche. Así que ayúdanos a tratarte bien". Amigos, esta es la actitud que deberíamos tener cuando dejamos este edificio. Cuando conocemos a Jesús en personas que nos encontramos allá afuera, nosotros tratamos a Jesús bien, tratando a las personas bien.
Every Saturday night a group of Christians serve at a food line for the poor in a large city. Before they open the doors, these Christians gather around the food and hold hands and pray. Mary, a woman who was once poor and homeless, leads them in prayer. She prays, "Lord Jesus we know you will be coming through this line tonight. So help us to treat you well." Friends, this is the attitude we should have when we leave this building. When we meet Jesus in the people that we meet outside this building we will treat Jesus well by treating the people well.
Finalmente, la parte más retadora en este texto es lo que Jesús espera de nosotros como seguidores. Lo que quiero decir es que tipo de compromiso quiere de nosotros? Pregunta El sólo por un compromiso parcial, como un compromiso de una hora por semana? No, Jesús nos requiere un compromiso completo de nuestras vidas para El. Hermanos y hermanas, desde que Jesús murió por nosotros en la cruz, ¿no tiene el derecho de demandarnos un compromiso total? El dio absolutamente todo lo que tenía para que nosotros pudieramos vivir. ¿No tiene El el derecho de exigir un compromiso total de nosotros? SI!
Finally, the most challenging part of this text is what Jesus expects from us as his followers. I mean what type of commitment does Jesus want from us? Does he ask for just a partial commitment like one hour per week commitment? No Jesus asks us for a complete commitment of our lives to him. Brothers and sisters, since Jesus died on a cross for us, then doesn’t he have the right to demand a total commitment from us? I mean he gave absolutely everything he had so that we could live. Doesn’t he have the right to command a total commitment from us? Yes.
Un general Romano estaba discutiendo los planes de una batalla con sus comandantes. Alguien recomendó un curso de acción. Este hombre dijo, "Este sólo costará la vida de unos pocos hombres". El general miró al hombre a los ojos y dijo, "¿Esta dispuesto a ser uno de estos pocos?" Hermanos y hermanas, hoy nuestro Señor Jesús nos ve y nos dice, "Yo he dado mi todo por ti para que vivas eternamente en paz conmigo. ¿Estas dispuesto a ser uno de estos pocos?". Amen.
A Roman general was discussing battle plans with his commanders. Someone recommended a course of action. The man said, "It will only cost the lives of a few men." The general looked the man in the eye and said, "Are you willing to be one of the few?" Brothers and sisters, today our Lord Jesus looks at us and says, "I have given my all for you that you can live eternally in peace with me. Are you willing to be one of the few?" Amen.
Oremos: Señor Jesús te agradecemos por tomar nuestro lugar y morir en la cruz por nuestros pecados. Tu nos has dado tu todo. Te damos las gracias Jesús. Porfavor, toma nuestros corazones y haznos uno de esos cuantos que deciden seguirte y servirte; haznos diferentes al mundo. En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.
Oremus: Lord Jesus we thank you for taking our place and dying on a cross for our sins. You have given us your all. We thank you Jesus. Please take our hearts and make us one of the few who choose to follow you and serve you…make us different than the world… in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…Amen.
