San Marcos 1: 9-15

Friends, in today’s gospel Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist. Now Jesus does not need to be baptized because he is without sin, and he is God’s Son. However, Jesus is baptized in order to identify with us completely and to receive more of the Holy Spirit. In our world today we believe that we are like Jesus…without sin. We believe that basically we are all good people. This is not true according to God’s word. Unlike Jesus we are sinners and we all make bad choices. We have all fallen short of what God’s intentions are for us and we all need to be baptized. We are baptized to have our sins forgiven and to become children of God and to receive the Holy Spirit for the transformation of our lives. The first step in receiving Jesus is to realize we are sinners in need of God’s grace and help. We need to realize without Jesus we can never live the life God wants for us…the fullest and best life.

Next we hear that Jesus is approved by his heavenly Father. His Father says,"You are my dear, dear child; I am delighted in you." Now isn’t this exactly what we want to hear from our parents? We want to know our parents approve of us and are pleased with us. However, many of us have never heard our parents approve of us. Thomas Wright writes, "The whole Christian gospel could be summed up in this point: that when the living God looks at us, at every baptized and believing Christian, he says to us what he said to Jesus on that day. He sees us not as we are in ourselves, but as we are in Christ Jesus. It sometimes feels impossible, especially to people who have not had this kind of support from their earthly parents, but it is true: God looks at us and says, "You are my dear, dear child; I am delighted with you." Friends, please believe these words! You are loved by God and he delights in you because through baptism we belong to Jesus!

And because we belong to Jesus we no longer fear our sins, death, or the devil. A young boy was caught misbehaving by his father. The father threatened the boy with punishment. The little boy stood up straight and said to his father, "You can’t touch me, I am baptized." Brothers and sisters, so it is with us, sin, death, and, the devil no longer have any power over us. We are baptized and are the personal property of Jesus. WE HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED! Amen.

Debemos esperar: pruebas y tentaciones.

Immediately after Jesus is baptized Jesus sends him out into the wilderness to be tempted. Through this experience Jesus is strengthened and grows in power. But the growth happens during times of testing. And so it is with us…during the hard times of life we grow spiritually. Baptism is just the beginning of our ongoing battle with Satan and temptation. We should expect trials and temptations.

When Saint Patrick was evangelizing Ireland, one day he baptized an Irish chieftain in the river. The chieftain came out into the middle of the river with Patrick to be baptized. When the man arrived Patrick pushed his staff deep into the mud of the river bottom in order to baptize the chief. When they came out of the water someone on the shore told Patrick he had hurt the chieftain’s foot with his staff because chief’s foot was between his staff and the river bottom. Patrick went to the chief to apologize and he asked, "Why did you not cry out when I struck your foot?" Surprised the chief answered, "I remember you telling us about the nails in the cross, and I thought my pain was part of my baptism." Friends when we are baptized, it does not mean we will simply experience good things here on earth. It is the beginning of a Life of trials and temptations. But we are never alone… Jesus and his angels are with us.

Finally Jesus overcomes the temptations and goes on to preach the good news to the people. Jesus tells the people to turn back to God and trust Jesus. Today Jesus tells us the exact same thing. We are to turn back to God in Christ and trust Jesus with our lives.

Now in this picture on the screen Jesus is the light house and we are the boat. Now we can either be heading out to sea and into darkness or we can return to the light of Jesus and return to a save harbor which is a relationship with Jesus. Now many years ago I was way out to sea in the darkness of alcoholism but by God’s love and generosity I saw the light of Jesus and returned to safe harbor. Now what is amazing is that when I returned to the light of Jesus I saw just how blind I was. I was in deep dark waters and would have perished without Jesus. For you see eventually the darkness ends in eternal death. Now looking back I can see the darkness of alcoholism. Now others of us looking back may see drugs or sexual sins or jealousy or anger or pornography or graffiti. Yes graffiti is a sin! And there are people today who even write graffiti on God’s house. How can this be? It can be because those people are way out to sea in the darkness and they are blind to the truth. And today many of us are heading out to the sea of darkness. Brothers and sisters, today Jesus calls us to turn our boats around no matter where they are and to return to the safety of his arms. Amen.

Oremus: Lord Jesus shine your light on us so that we can see our sin and return to you. Help us to turn our boats around…in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
